COC

Chain-of-Custody

A documented line, from the forests to the end users to ensure traceability and accountability of the products.

FSC Chain-of-Custody certification traces the path of products from forests through the supply chain to the retailers to ensure that all products come from legal and well managed forests.

PEFC Chain of Custody certification outlines requirements for tracking certified material from the forest to the final product to ensure that the wood contained in the product or product line originates from certified forests.

EUTR

European Union Timber Regulations - EU

The EUTR, which came into force on 3 March 2013, requires the party which places timber or timber products in the EU market for the first time (the ‘operator') to exercise ‘due diligence' to minimize the risk of placing illegally harvested timber, or products containing illegally harvested timber on the EU market.

FLEGT

Forest Law Enforcement, Government and Trade - EU

FLEGT stands for Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade. The EU's FLEGT Action Plan was established in 2003. It aims to reduce illegal logging by strengthening sustainable and legal forest management, improving governance and promoting trade in legally produced timber.

FLEGT VPA

Forest Law Enforcement, Government and Trade Voluntary Partnership Agreement - EU

Malaysia-EU Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade, Voluntary Partnership Agreement (FLEGT VPA) started in 2006 with the objective to ensure the export of legal timber to the EU. Underpinning the negotiation is the development of a timber legality assurance system (TLAS) which will ensure the supply and export of only legal timber to the EU.

FSC

Forest Stewardship Council

Promote environmentally sound, socially beneficial and economically prosperous management of the world's forests. Advantages to choosing FSC-certified products are:

Credibility - FSC is an independent, member-led group organized into social, environmental, and economic chambers that have equal authority.

Environmental Protection – Aspects of the system includes the protection of water quality, prohibit harvest of rare old-growth forest, prevent loss of natural forest cover and prohibit highly hazardous chemicals.

Community Engagement - FSC requires forest managers to engage local community members and to protect customary rights of indigenous people.

Access to Markets - Many major organisations’ preference for FSC-certified products.

ILPAR

Illegal Logging Prohibition Amendment Regulation (ILPAR) 2013 - Australia

This Regulations will come into effect from 30th November 2014. It detailed the methods which Australian importers and Malaysian exporters have to fulfil the due diligence requirements through the Malaysian Country Specific Guideline (MCSG)

Malaysian Country Specific Guideline - Australia pdf

This is the guideline that has been prepared and will be jointly approved by the Australian and Malaysian Government. it is intended to assist Australian importers to identify regulated timber products from Malaysia. Its aim is to enable the Australian importers understand the regulatory framework in Malaysia in order for them to carry out their due deligence obligations under the Illegal Logging Prohibition Amendment Regulation 2013, which supports the Illegal Logging Prohibition Act 2012.

MYTLAS

Peninsular Malaysian Timber Legality Assurance System - EU

MYTLAS is Malaysia’s Due Diligence efforts in meeting the requirements of the EU Timber Regulation whilst Malaysia finalises its FLEGT VPA. The MYTLAS is NOT EU-endorsed as Malaysia is still in the process of finalising the FLEGT negotiations with the EU.

PEFC

Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification

PEFC is the world's largest forest certification system.  They seek to transform the way forests are managed and to ensure that we can enjoy the environmental, social and economic benefits that forests offer.

Obtaining PEFC Sustainable Forest Management certification demonstrates that management practices meet requirements for best practice in sustainable forest management, including:

Biodiversity of forest ecosystems is maintained or enhanced

The range of ecosystem services that forests provide is sustained

Chemicals are substituted by natural alternatives or their use is minimized

Workers' rights and welfare are protected

Local employment is encouraged

Indigenous peoples' rights are respected

Operations are undertaken within the legal framework and following best practices
